Aqiqah Rules for a Boy and a Girl in Islam
Aqiqah is a Sunnah (highly recommended act) in Islam performed to express gratitude to Allah for the birth of a child. The key rules vary slightly for a boy and a girl.
1. Number of Animals for Aqiqah
For a Boy: Two goats or two sheep
For a Girl: One goat or one sheep
2. Timing of Aqiqah
The preferred time to perform Aqiqah is on the 7th day after birth. If not possible, it can be done on the 14th, 21st, or later whenever feasible.
3. Conditions of the Sacrificial Animal
The goat or sheep must be healthy, free from defects, and of an appropriate age (similar to Qurbani rules).
It must be sacrificed in accordance with Islamic slaughtering guidelines (Tasmiyah – mentioning Allah’s name).
4. Distribution of Meat
The meat can be divided into three parts:One part for the family, One part for relatives and friends , One part for the poor and needy , Alternatively, all the meat can be donated to the underprivileged.
5. Shaving the Child’s Head & Charity
After performing Aqiqah, it is recommended to shave the baby’s head (both for boys and girls). The weight of the shaved hair should be measured, and its equivalent in silver should be given as charity.
6. Naming the Child
Aqiqah is often performed on the same day as the child’s naming ceremony (Tahnik).It is recommended to choose a good Islamic name with a meaningful significance.
7. Aqiqah is Sunnah, Not Mandatory
Aqiqah is a Sunnah Mu’akkadah (highly recommended but not obligatory). If parents cannot afford it, they are not held accountable in Islam.
