What is Aqeeqa?

Aqeeqa In Islam, is the sacrifice of livestock  such as goats and sheep, at the birth of a child. The Aqeeqah is performed as part of the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). It often takes place on the seventh day after a baby’s birth. However, there’s nothing wrong with doing it at a later time.

The sacrifice is then often divided between the family members who are carrying out the sacrifice. It’s often handed out to the poor and needy.
Aqeeqa is a form of celebration, and is a means of showing gratitude to Allah for the blessing of a new baby.

Every baby is held in pledge up to his aqiqah. So, on his seventh day, sacrifice should be made on his behalf, his head should be shaved, and he should be given a name.

Benefits of Performing Aqeeqa Online for Your Child

Aqeeqa is a time-honored Islamic tradition, serving as a meaningful ritual to welcome a newborn into the Muslim faith. It symbolizes the parents’ gratitude to Allah for the blessing of a child and is considered a way to seek protection, blessings, and well-being for the newborn. By performing Aqeeqa, parents demonstrate faith, obedience to the Sunnah, and a commitment to raising their child according to Islamic principles and moral values.

This sacred Islamic practice involves the halal sacrifice of one or two sheep or goats, depending on the gender of the child—two for a boy and one for a girl. The meat from the Aqeeqa sacrifice is distributed among family members, relatives, neighbors, and especially the needy. This act of giving fulfills a religious duty, strengthens family ties, promotes community cohesion, and reflects the Islamic values of charity, generosity, and social responsibility. While performing Aqeeqa on the seventh day after the child’s birth is recommended, it can also be conducted later if circumstances require.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, “Aqeeqa is to be offered for a (newly born) boy, so slaughter (an animal) for him, and relieve him of his suffering” (Sahih Bukhari). This emphasizes the spiritual and protective significance of the practice, as well as its roots in the Sunnah.

Aqeeqa also serves as a community celebration and social gathering. Families traditionally invite relatives, friends, and neighbors to share a meal, fostering unity, joy, and collective support. It publicly welcomes the child into the Muslim community and highlights the network of care and guidance they will receive throughout their life.

Furthermore, Aqeeqa reflects Islamic charitable principles, as distributing the meat to orphans, poor families, and vulnerable communities teaches generosity, compassion, and empathy. Children learn the value of giving and social responsibility, while adults demonstrate the practice of Islamic ethics and community service. Through Aqeeqa, parents exemplify faith, gratitude, and active engagement in nurturing both family and society.

Key Elements of Aqeeqa Ceremony

Celebrate new life with meaningful traditions.

Timing of Aqeeqa

Aqeeqa is ideally performed on the seventh day after the child’s birth, following Sunnah. Performing it on this day brings spiritual significance and blessings.

Selecting the Animal

Choose a healthy sheep or goat that meets Islamic requirements for Aqeeqa. The animal should be free from any defects to ensure the sacrifice is accepted.

Distribution of Meat

The meat is divided into three parts: one-third for family, one-third for friends, and one-third for the needy, ensuring the spirit of sharing and charity is upheld.

Invitations and Gatherings

Family and community members are invited to share a meal, which strengthens bonds and joyously marks the child’s entry into the Muslim community.

Recitation of Duas

During the ceremony, special prayers and blessings are recited for the newborn, asking Allah for protection and guidance on their journey through life.

Hair Cutting and Naming

The child’s hair is traditionally shaved, and the weight in silver is given as charity, symbolizing purification. The naming of the child often coincides with the Aqeeqa.
